The Swan Inn dates back to 1390 and is at present owned by Terrence Martin (no relation unfortunately).
It has a 16th century chimney and a medieval kitchen (which is the 2nd best preserved in Essex). Although the pub is now a free house Green King has been the supplier since 1982, serving IPA, Abbott and 1 guest beer. Since Terry took over the pub many alterations have been made. Originally there were 2 small bars and many smaller rooms, now there is 1 large bar area with seating for food, 2 restaurant areas and a small locals bar in the centre. The restaurant serves excellent food specialising in many varieties of fresh fish, but unfortunately has only ever served it with peas and a choice of chips or new potatoes (the locals long for more variety here!). There is also a large courtyard area behind the pub with gas heaters and the garden area is set next to the river Colne.

Here is John - works the bar at weekends, and may he continue to for many more years.
Sadly John passed away in April 2007 - he is much missed by all the regulars and staff.
MArch 2008 - Terry has now retired and the pub is now owned by a chain. The biggest down side is that it is no longer a dog friendly pub, so us and many of the locals will be looking elsewhere. Check out the page on The Thatchers - a great dog friendly pub with real ale and excellent food.
