The 2 villages of Chappel and Wakes Colne lie in the valley on opposite sides of the river Colne.
Above is a picture of the Chappel viaduct which dominates the landscape. The brick built viaduct was planned in 1845 and completed in 1847. It has 32 arches each with a 30 foot span. The highest point is 80 feet above the river. It was built with 6,000,000 local bricks but is not level and has a rise of 9 foot 6 inches.
